Clean water and air

The water we drink and the air we breathe are the fundamentals of life on the planet. But according to the United Nations more than half of the global population don’t have to safe sanitary services and more than 2 billion suffer from lack of access to clean drinking water. Untreated wastewater remains and source of contamination and a missed opportunity for reusing water as a valuable resource.

According to the European Commission around 90% of Europeans living in cities are exposed to pollutants at concentrations higher than the air quality levels deemed harmful to health. For example, fine particulate matter in air has been estimated to reduce life expectancy in the EU by more than eight months.Pollution control is at the core of environmental governance. Long-term and peak exposures to these pollutants range in severity of impact, from impairing the respiratory system to premature death. To achieve the SDG’s for Water and Sanitation by 2030 the global progress has to happen at 4 times the current pace.
