Supporting Arctic environmental protection through targeted research and grant funding

The Danish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administers a grant program to support research and initiatives that protect the Arctic environment, particularly in Greenland. These grants fund projects focused on monitoring biodiversity, safeguarding ecosystems, and advancing environmental protection strategies in line with the Arctic Environmental Protection Strategy (AEPS). Ensuring effective allocation and oversight of these grants is essential to supporting scientific research and conservation efforts in the region.

Previously, the grant management process was largely manual, requiring significant administrative effort to track applications, budgets, and disbursements. Additionally, the international nature of the program meant that many applicants were not integrated into Greenland and Denmark’s national digital infrastructures, such as digital ID and electronic signatures. This created challenges in ensuring transparency, compliance, and efficiency in processing applications and tracking payouts over multiple years. The Danish EPA needed a digital solution to centralize and streamline the grant management process while maintaining fairness, accuracy, and compliance with funding regulations.

Improving efficiency, transparency, and financial oversight in arctic grant management

The implementation of the F2 platform improved the efficiency and transparency of the Arctic grant management process. Case workers in Denmark and Greenland experienced better coordination and workflow, leading to faster responses to applications. The system ensured equal treatment of applicants through a standardized evaluation process. Furthermore, the platform's ability to manage staged payouts provided better control and overview of aggregated disbursements over the years, enhancing financial oversight and accountability.​
