The challenge

Strengthening wastewater oversight for environmental protection

The Danish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is responsible for regulating and inspecting wastewater discharge, which includes water from residential, commercial, and industrial sources, as well as stormwater runoff. Wastewater management is crucial for maintaining environmental standards, and discharge permits are required to ensure compliance with regulations. The EPA oversees wastewater treatment plants, water companies, and approximately 18,000-20,000 rainwater overflow outlets across Denmark.

Effective wastewater regulation is crucial to protecting water quality, preventing pollution, and ensuring that discharge permits are followed. To strengthen its oversight and improve inspection efficiency, the Danish EPA required a digital solution to manage wastewater inspections, track compliance, and support structured governance. The goal was to establish a centralized system that would allow for improved datamanagement, better coordination of inspections, and streamlined workflows for regulatory enforcement.

The solution

Implementing a centralized digital system for wastewater inspections

The Danish EPA implemented the F2 platform as a fully digital case management system to streamline wastewater inspection processes. The solution was designed to integrate all wastewater-related inspections into a single platform, ensuring that all regulatory activities, incident reports, and historical inspection data were recorded and easily accessible. The implementation was completed within seven months, providing a structured and automated approach to wastewater oversight.

The system maintains a base register of all wastewater-related facilities, including wastewater treatment plants, rainwater overflow sites, and water companies. By structuring inspections using case hierarchies and case guides, the platform links all relevant data, ensuring that reporting, accident handling, and compliance checks are systematically recorded. Each year, a wastewater summit determines the thematic focus for inspections. Based on these themes, an inspection case is created, and water companies are required to submit data. This information is automatically transferred to self-service forms, allowing inspectors to efficiently conduct site visits and record their findings in the system. The digital solution enables real-time tracking of inspection history, integrates incident-based inspections, and provides a unified governance system for wastewater oversight.

The result

Enhanced efficiency and streamlined inspection processes

The implementation of the F2 platform has enhanced the Danish EPA’s ability to regulate wastewater management efficiently. The centralized system provides a complete overview of wastewater treatment facilities, inspection activities, and compliance history, allowing for more strategic planning and targeted enforcement.

By integrating structured workflows and automated reporting, the solution has improved transparency, reduced administrative burdens, and strengthened regulatory oversight. Inspectors can now track compliance history, identify high-risk areas, and allocate resources more effectively. The ability to automate data collection and streamline inspection processes has led to faster response times and more effective environmental protection measures.

By adopting a fully digital case management system, the Danish EPA has improved its ability to monitor wastewater compliance, ensuring a structured and scalable approach to environmental regulation.
